PJ’s Reaction: Week 3 - Cowboys 18, Redskins 16

If you had told me yesterday that the Cowboys would win a game this year solely by virtue of Dan Bailey going 6 for 6 on field goals, I would have shaken your hand, patted your head and made a donation to a charity that helps people like you. Cowboys kickers simply doesn’t have perfect games anymore and it certainly is never enough with all the mistakes we tend to make in every other phase of the game.

There was, in fact, an obscene amount of mistakes which nearly cost us the game, but somehow the team came together in a way that just barely got the job done.

This is a big win, not only because it keeps us from falling behind in our division and keeps us above .500, but because it’s the type of grind-it-out win that builds character for a team. A lot is made of the journey a team takes toward the Super Bowl, and a lot of that is bullshit, but there is something to be said for a team facing adversity together and coming out of it having conquered it together.

All that being said, there is a lot to be concerned about. We’re going to be talking about depth all season long. Romo is one big hit to the ribs away from being done for a long time, and the secondary rarely gets an opportunity to be on the field all together. Wide receiver depth proved to be an insidious concern. The team really needs Miles Austin and Dez Bryant at 100% simply for the sake of being able to run the offense with confidence, it seems.

A W is a W, but we shouldn’t start expecting to win games like this consistently.
